Ntozake Shange's choreopoem has been described as "a dramatic elegy for black women with an undercurrent message for everyone."
Initially staged in California (USA) in 1975 and later performed Off- and On-Broadway in New York, and adapted as a book, a television film, and a theatrical film, the playwright won an Obie Award for the play and the Broadway production won the 1977 Tony Awards for Best Play and Best Featured Actress (Trazana Beverley – Lady in Red).
The Arts Canvas revives this "landmark piece in African American literature and black feminism" on July 19 to August 3 2013 at The Phoenix Theatre, Professional Centre, Parliament Road, Nairobi.
